Everything had to be \u201cjuuuust right\u201d. Recruiting\u2019s a bit like that. You want your shortlisters to have just the right balance of hard and soft skills. That\u2019s the key to finding the ideal employee.<\/p>\n<p>In recruitment, we take a good look at a person\u2019s hard and soft skills and come up with a bigger overall picture. We\u2019ve found that successful candidates are those who fit both bills. You\u2019ve probably seen it yourself. A person can be absolutely brilliant technically but can\u2019t hold a decent conversation. That could spell disaster if their role is to work with customers and other employees. Or maybe you\u2019ve interviewed someone who seems a born leader and is really motivated to do a spectacular job, but doesn\u2019t have the academic qualifications you know are important for that role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot too soft and not too hard\u201d may come directly from a fairy tale but it\u2019s a good adage to keep in mind when you\u2019re looking for new talent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hard skills are taught and learned<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hard skills are the \u2018programmable\u2019 side of a person. This is education, experience and proficiency.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are they proficient in software that\u2019s used at your company?<\/li>\n<li>Do they speak another language?<\/li>\n<li>Are they experts in one or two specific fields?<\/li>\n<li>Have they won awards for their knowledge or skills?<\/li>\n<li>Do they have exceptional industry-specific knowledge?<\/li>\n<li>How have they proven themselves as a superstar in a role similar to what you\u2019re offering?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now remember, just because someone has rock star hard skills, you mustn\u2019t overlook the soft skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soft skills don\u2019t come from books<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These represent the more \u2018human\u2019 side of a person. They can\u2019t be quantified and they\u2019re completely subjective, but they matter every bit as much as hard skills. In fact, soft skills can get a candidate over the line at interview stage, even if they\u2019re facing off against someone equally qualified.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are they a born leader?<\/li>\n<li>Are they \u2018good with people\u2019?<\/li>\n<li>Do they have you intrigued\/amused\/fascinated?<\/li>\n<li>Have previous employers said they\u2019re great problem solvers or really adaptable?<\/li>\n<li>Does their sense of ethics and fairness resonate with your company culture?<\/li>\n<li>Do you find yourself unable to look past them?<\/li>\n<li>Do they seem \u2018magnetic\u2019, charismatic, interested as well as interesting?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A candidate\u2019s soft skills can quite literally be deal breakers\u00a0<em>or\u00a0<\/em>deal makers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finding that \u2018just right\u2019 person for your vacant position<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Think beyond the role and consider who they\u2019ll be working with and how much input they\u2019ll have in the organisation. Choosing someone based purely on either their hard\u00a0<em>or\u00a0<\/em>soft skills could mean missing out on the perfect person. Write up a comprehensive brief including not just the nuts and bolts of\u00a0<em>what\u00a0<\/em>you\u2019re looking for but also\u00a0<em>who\u00a0<\/em>you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<p>As an expert in matching personalities with businesses, I know pretty much instantly what will and what won\u2019t work.
